Cancellation Geocaching: Easy Method

What is Geocaching

Overview

Geocaching is a location-based outdoor treasure-hunting game operated by Groundspeak via Geocaching.com and mobile apps. Players search for hidden containers (caches) using GPS-enabled devices, log finds online, and may choose a paid Premium membership for advanced search tools, premium-only caches, offline maps, Pocket Queries and other features.

How to cancel Geocaching

  • Web (Geocaching.com): Log in at Geocaching.com, go to Account → Manage Premium Membership → Stop Recurring Membership to turn off auto-renewal. This is the only method to stop recurring billing for memberships bought on the website.
  • App Store (Apple): Subscriptions purchased through Apple must be cancelled through your Apple ID/iTunes/App Store account or via Apple Support. You cannot cancel an Apple in-app subscription from within the Geocaching app or website; uninstalling the app will not stop the subscription. See Apple's subscription support for steps.
  • Google Play: Subscriptions purchased through Google Play must be cancelled through your Google Play account (play.google.com or the Google Play app). You cannot cancel a Play subscription from within the Geocaching app or website; uninstalling does not cancel billing.
  • Mail (optional): If you prefer a paper notice, send a cancellation/notice letter by certified mail / raccomandata A/R to Groundspeak, Inc., 837 N. 34th Street, Suite 300, Seattle, Washington 98103, USA. Keep the certified mail receipt as proof of mailing.

What happens when you cancel

Stopping recurring membership prevents future charges but does not necessarily delete your account. You will retain Premium access until the end of your paid period unless a refund is issued that shortens access. After your paid period ends (or after an approved refund where access is ended early), your account reverts to Basic and premium-only features (advanced searches, premium caches, Pocket Queries, offline maps, etc.) become unavailable. Your geocache finds, logs and account data remain on Geocaching.com unless you explicitly request account deletion through their support channels.

Will I get a refund?

Refund eligibility depends on how the subscription was purchased and the timing. For memberships bought on the web or via Google Play: yearly or quarterly subscriptions require emailing Geocaching support within 30 days of purchase or renewal to request a refund (refunds include applicable taxes); approved refunds typically end the membership within about a week and the account reverts to Basic. For monthly web or Google Play subscriptions: you must email within 14 days of the initial purchase to receive a full refund (including taxes); after 14 days no refund is offered, and access generally continues until the paid period ends (Geocaching’s policy notes access continues until 30 days after the last payment in some cases). Apple in-app purchases are subject to Apple’s refund and cancellation processes - refunds and disputes for Apple purchases must be handled via Apple. Note that EU/UK 14‑day digital withdrawal rights do not apply in Canada; Canadian refunds follow Geocaching’s stated policy. See Geocaching’s refund policy for full details: Geocaching refund policy.

Geocaching plans and pricing

Plan Price (CAD) Period Features
Monthly Premium (Canada) C$6.99 Monthly Full Premium access: advanced searches, offline geocaching, premium-only caches, Pocket Queries, more map types, messaging, notifications, stats
Annual Premium (Canada) C$39.99 Annual Same Premium features, billed yearly (~C$3.33/month equivalent)

Your consumer rights in Canada

Canadian consumer protections generally do not provide a universal 14‑day "cooling off" right for digital subscriptions. Refunds for Geocaching Premium are governed by the company’s own policies and by the rules of the platform used to purchase (Apple, Google, or Geocaching’s website). If you bought physical goods from Shop Geocaching, a 30‑day money‑back guarantee applies Canada‑wide (shipping excluded unless items are defective), but that guarantee covers merchandise only, not subscriptions. For questions about chargebacks or banking disputes, contact your payment provider or card issuer and keep documentation of your cancellation attempt and receipts. See the shop customer service page: Shop Geocaching customer service.

Customer experiences

Public reviews are mixed. Some users report high satisfaction with the platform and app features, citing strong ratings on several review sites. Other users complain about limited app features compared to third‑party apps, difficulty getting issues resolved, and frustrations with customer service or perceived restrictions. Independent review pages and forums illustrate both positive feedback (ease of use, useful premium tools) and criticisms (interface limitations, support responsiveness). Examples include user reviews on Sitejabber, aggregated app ratings on JustUseApp, and community discussion on Reddit.

Documentation checklist

  • Account email/username and Geocaching account page screenshot
  • Purchase receipt or invoice showing date, amount, and purchase method (Apple/Google/Web)
  • Screenshot of subscription in App Store / Google Play (if purchased through those platforms)
  • Dates of purchase or renewal and a clear statement requesting cancellation/refund
  • Proof of cancellation (confirmation emails, subscription status screenshots) or certified mail receipt if mailed
  • Copies of any correspondence with Geocaching or the app store support teams

Common mistakes

Users commonly assume uninstalling the Geocaching app cancels the subscription - it does not; you must cancel through the platform where you purchased. Another frequent error is attempting to cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription from Geocaching.com; platform purchases must be managed via Apple or Google. Missing the refund window (14 days for monthly, 30 days for yearly/quarterly on web/Google Play) is a frequent issue - if you wait beyond those windows, a refund is unlikely. Not keeping receipts, failing to include proof of purchase in refund requests, or relying on EU/UK withdrawal rights in Canada are additional typical mistakes.

Comparative recap

Method Refund Difficulty
Web (Geocaching.com) Yearly/quarterly: email within 30 days for refund (incl. taxes). Monthly: email within 14 days for full refund. See Geocaching refund policy. Easy - cancel directly on your account page; refund requests via support email.
Google Play Refunds follow Google/Geocaching rules: yearly/quarterly → email Geocaching within 30 days; monthly → email within 14 days for full refund. Platform involvement required. Medium - must manage subscription through Google Play and follow Google/Geocaching refund processes.
App Store (Apple) Refunds and cancellations handled by Apple; pursue via Apple ID/iTunes/App Store or Apple Support. Medium - Hard - must work through Apple support channels for refunds and cancellation.

After cancelling

After you cancel, save confirmation emails and screenshots showing the subscription was turned off or a refund was requested. Monitor your bank or card statements to confirm charges stop. If a refund is approved, the membership may end shortly thereafter (Geocaching notes refunded memberships often end within about a week). If you have a dispute or need a formal notice, send a signed letter by certified mail / raccomandata A/R to Groundspeak, Inc. Keep all documentation until the matter is resolved. Useful pages: Geocaching account help (manage subscriptions), refund policy (refund policy), Apple support for subscriptions and refunds (Apple support site), and Google Play subscriptions help (Google Play Help).
