Cancellation Foresters: Easy Method
What is Foresters
Foresters is a fraternal benefit society that offers life, critical illness and other insurance products along with member benefits such as discounts, grants and the Foresters Go member app. In Canada, Foresters issues individual policies and member services through regional operations and standard consumer channels.
How to cancel Foresters
- If the policy is newly issued, cancel within the 10-day free-look (cooling-off) period by returning the contract package or submitting a signed written request (surrender) to Foresters; this must be within 10 days of receipt for a full refund. See Foresters customer-care guidance: foresters.com.
- Submit cancellation requests in writing - signed letter, the insurer’s surrender form, or an emailed scanned signed request. Cancellation by phone alone is not sufficient; retain proof of submission.
- To cancel Foresters Go (member benefits app), delete your account via the Subscription Preferences in MyForesters, use the delete-account button in the app, or request deletion by email to forestersgo@foresters.com (English) or forestersgoFR@foresters.com (French).
- If you have trouble or a dispute, send correspondence marked for Consumer Complaints / Ombudsman attention and keep records for escalation (internal Ombudsman, OLHI or provincial regulator).
What happens when you cancel
When your cancellation is processed during the free-look period, Foresters should void the certificate and refund premiums in full. If you cancel after the free-look period, coverage typically ends according to the policy effective date and future premium obligations stop, but any premium refund, cash surrender value or outstanding fees depend on the policy terms.
Cancelling may also remove access to member benefits tied to the policy and can stop automatic renewals. Personal data retention and account deletion follow Foresters’ privacy and app terms; always request written confirmation of both policy termination and data/account deletion if required.
Will I get a refund?
If you cancel within Foresters’ 10-day free-look (cooling-off) period for newly issued certificates - including critical illness policies - you are entitled to a full refund of premiums paid. Critical illness policies specifically note penalty-free cancellation within 10 days of issue for a full refund.
Outside the free-look period, refunds are governed by the contract. Some products do not provide refunds after the cooling-off period, while others may offer prorated refunds or surrender values; consumers have reported difficulties obtaining refunds in some cases. If a refund is disputed, escalate via Foresters’ complaint process and, if unresolved, to external dispute bodies.
Foresters plans and pricing
| Plan | Price | Period | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foresters Life Insurance 20‑Year Term ($500,000) | C$33.84/month (Male, age 20); C$34.30/month (Male, age 30); C$51.91/month (Male, age 40); C$139.98/month (Male, age 50); C$494.55/month (Male, age 60); C$23.64 - C$332.33/month (Females, same ages) | Monthly | 20‑year term life insurance; $500,000 coverage; fixed premiums; sample pricing based on non‑smoker, Ontario residents (sample data). |
Your consumer rights in Canada
Canadian consumers are protected by a mandatory free-look (cooling-off) period for life and certain health-related policies; Foresters’ free-look is 10 days for newly issued certificates. During this time you may cancel for a full refund.
After the free-look period, refund and surrender rights depend on the policy wording. Cancellation must be made in writing (return of the contract package or signed written request); phone-only cancellations are generally not sufficient. If Foresters does not resolve a complaint, you can use their internal Ombudsman process and escalate to the OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance (OLHI) or the appropriate provincial regulator (for example, Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) in Quebec or the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) in Saskatchewan).
Customer experiences
Customer feedback is mixed. Some individuals have praised particular advisors for clear, patient guidance when buying policies. However, many complaints relate to difficult cancellations, delayed or no email responses, unscheduled withdrawals causing non-sufficient-funds charges, billing after cancellation, and challenges obtaining refunds or corrections when policy riders were misrepresented.
These reports suggest keeping careful records, using written requests, and escalating promptly when responses are slow.
Documentation checklist
- Policy number and certificate/contract package (originals if available).
- Signed written cancellation request or completed surrender form (dated).
- Copy of government ID matching the policyholder.
- Proof of purchase/payment (bank statements showing premium payments).
- Proof of delivery (registered mail tracking or courier receipt) and any email confirmations.
- Notes of phone calls: date, time, agent name, and summary.
- Date of issue to confirm free‑look window and a copy of any communications about riders or benefits.
Common mistakes
Consumers commonly make errors that delay cancellation or refunds: sending only a phone request with no written follow-up; missing the 10-day free-look window; failing to sign the written request; neglecting to send cancellation by registered/traceable mail or to obtain proof of delivery; not cancelling bank pre-authorized payments separately; and not retaining copies of all correspondence and confirmations for escalation.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Return contract / Signed written request within 10 days | Full refund | Low |
| Foresters Go account deletion or email request | Possible refund only if within free-look or policy permits | Low - Medium (account deletion is straightforward; refunds depend on policy) |
| Written surrender after free-look | Varies by policy (possible prorated or no refund) | Medium - High (may require negotiation and documentation) |
| Phone-only cancellation | Not sufficient alone for guaranteed refund | High (often requires follow-up in writing) |
| File complaint / Ombudsman escalation | Possible remediation or refund if justified | High (time-consuming but necessary if unresolved) |
After cancelling
After cancellation, keep all written confirmations and monitor your bank or credit card for any further withdrawals; notify your bank to stop pre-authorized payments if necessary. If a refund is due, request a timeline and confirmation in writing. If Foresters does not resolve the issue, follow the insurer’s complaint process and consider contacting external dispute resolution bodies.
