Cancellation Gocardless: Easy Method
What is GoCardless
Service overview
GoCardless is a payments platform that enables businesses to collect recurring and one-off Direct Debit payments from customers.
It acts as a payment processor and gateway between merchants and banks rather than a consumer-facing store or app distributor.
Role in payments
GoCardless manages mandates and the collection flow; merchants control subscriptions and payout handling via their dashboard.
Payers interact with their bank or the merchant for many consumer actions such as refunds or mandate revocation.
How to cancel GoCardless
Cancel via your bank
- Contact your bank and request cancellation of the Direct Debit mandate for the merchant.
- Provide your account details, mandate reference (if available) and the merchant name to the bank.
- Your bank can cancel the mandate on your behalf; timing depends on the bank's processes.
Cancel via the merchant or dashboard
- Ask the merchant to cancel payments or the mandate for you; merchants can cancel a specific mandate or disable all mandates for a customer.
- Merchants cancel a mandate by navigating in their dashboard to customer → mandate → cancel.
- See GoCardless guidance for merchants on cancelling customers: Cancelling a customer.
Cancel via GoCardless support
- If you cannot reach the merchant or bank, submit a ticket to GoCardless including your email, merchant name and relevant details.
- GoCardless support can advise but cannot reinstate a cancelled mandate once it is cancelled.
- General payer FAQs and payment guides are available: GoCardless Payer FAQ.
What happens when you cancel
Effect on future payments
Cancelling a mandate stops future Direct Debit collections from that merchant under that mandate.
If a merchant cancels a customer record, all associated mandates are disabled and no further collections will occur.
Data and account access
Transaction history and records are retained according to the merchant's and GoCardless's data retention policies.
GoCardless cannot reinstate a mandate once cancelled, so a new mandate is required to resume collections.
Will I get a refund?
Refunds from the merchant
Merchants can issue refunds (full or partial) via their GoCardless dashboard if the refund feature is enabled for their account.
When a merchant refunds using the dashboard, customers typically receive funds within 1 - 2 working days, subject to bank processing.
Bank indemnity and GoCardless limitations
GoCardless cannot refund payouts directly to payers in all cases; if a payment was taken erroneously, contact your bank to request a refund (an indemnity claim).
GoCardless and merchants may have rules (for example default restrictions on refunds within 7 days) designed to avoid refunding funds not yet received; check merchant terms or ask the merchant directly. For details see: Refund a payment.
GoCardless plans and pricing
Pricing availability
GoCardless publishes pricing for selected countries and currencies but does not show public INR-denominated pricing for India (2024/2025).
For India-specific rates or tailored plans, contact GoCardless sales for a quotation.
How to request pricing
Ask the merchant or GoCardless sales for an INR quote and any volume discounts or setup fees that may apply.
Note that pricing is location-dependent and often provided in GBP, USD, EUR, DKK or other currencies.
| Plan | Period | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Per transaction / setup | Contact for pricing | Contact GoCardless sales for INR pricing and customised rates. |
Your consumer rights in India
Bank indemnity claims
Under Indian banking practice, you may be able to request a refund from your bank for unauthorised or erroneous debits via an indemnity or dispute process.
Timing and acceptance of such claims depend on the bank and the facts; keep payment records and mandate details to support any claim.
Consumer protection and merchant terms
Indian consumer law (for example the Consumer Protection Act) offers protections for unfair or unauthorized transactions, but GoCardless itself is a processor, not the merchant.
Refund timelines or cooling-off rights are governed by the merchant's terms and your bank's rules rather than by GoCardless alone. See recourse rules: PAD recourse guide.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
Reviewers commonly praise GoCardless for making recurring payments and Direct Debit management simple and efficient for small businesses.
Sources cite ease of integration, reasonable fees in supported markets, and smooth onboarding for many users. See examples on review sites: SoftwareAdvice reviews.
Common complaints
Negative reviews often mention withheld or delayed funds, sudden account limitations, and opaque account closure reasons leading to cash-flow issues.
Other pain points include heavy documentation during onboarding and occasional integration or bank-sync problems. Representative feedback is available on Trustpilot: Trustpilot.
Documentation checklist
For individuals (payers)
- Full name and contact email used with the merchant.
- Bank account details or last 4 digits and any mandate reference shown on statements.
- Date(s) and amounts of the payment(s) in dispute and merchant name.
For businesses (merchants)
- Customer name, customer ID in your dashboard and mandate reference(s).
- Payment timestamps, invoices and proof of authorisation if available.
- Any correspondence with the payer and reason for cancellation/refund.
Common mistakes
Mistakes when cancelling
Trying to cancel a Direct Debit via an app store (App Store or Google Play) is a common error; GoCardless is a backend payment processor and cancellations occur via bank or merchant.
Another mistake is not providing the mandate reference or sufficient bank details when asking the bank to cancel, which slows processing.
Mistakes about refunds
Expecting GoCardless to directly refund payouts to the payer in all cases is incorrect; often refunds must come from the merchant or via a bank indemnity claim.
Assuming a statutory 14-day refund through GoCardless is also incorrect - refund rights depend on bank rules and merchant terms, not GoCardless itself.
Comparative recap
Quick comparison
| Method | Who can initiate | Typical effect timing | Refund route | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank cancellation | Payer (via bank) | Varies by bank; often immediate for future collections | Indemnity claim via bank if payment was erroneous | Account details, mandate reference, transaction dates |
| Merchant dashboard | Merchant | Immediate for future collections once cancelled | Merchant-issued refund via dashboard (if enabled) or merchant refund policy | Customer ID, mandate and transaction records |
| GoCardless support ticket | Payer or merchant | Depends on investigation; advisory only | Depends on merchant action or bank claim; GoCardless cannot always refund payers directly | Email, merchant name, transaction details |
After cancelling
Next steps
Confirm cancellation with both your bank and the merchant in writing and keep records of the confirmation.
If money was taken in error, contact your bank promptly to lodge an indemnity/dispute claim and provide supporting documents.
