Cancellation Zerodha: Easy Method

What is Zerodha

Overview

Zerodha is a leading online discount brokerage firm in India offering trading in equities, derivatives, commodities, and mutual funds via platforms such as Kite and Coin.

It focuses on low-cost brokerage, a digital account opening flow, and retail trading tools for Indian investors and traders.

Key services

Core services include trading accounts, Demat accounts, margin and pledge facilities, and paid analytics products such as Tickertape Pro.

Zerodha’s customer-facing policies are documented on its support pages for account modification, closure, and account-opening refunds.

How to cancel Zerodha

Deactivation (temporary)

  • Request the Kill Switch by submitting a filled deactivation form (printed + courier or electronically signed).
  • Raise a support ticket with the completed form; Zerodha processes deactivation within 72 working hours after receipt.
  • Refer to Zerodha’s deactivation instructions: Deactivate account (Zerodha Support).

Permanent account closure

  • Complete and sign the account closure form (including additional joint/minor/commodity forms if applicable).
  • Submit the signed form via courier to the Customer Support Centre address or use eSign if available.
  • Zerodha processes closure requests and closes accounts within 2 working days after receiving a valid form and once all dues/holdings are resolved.
  • Official closure instructions: How do I close my Zerodha account?.

What happens when you cancel

Access and services

On deactivation, trading access is suspended temporarily; you cannot place new orders until reactivation.

On permanent closure, trading and Demat services are terminated once the closure is processed and holdings are transferred or settled.

Data, billing and timelines

When an account is permanently closed, AMC charges stop from the account closure date specified by Zerodha.

Keep copies of ticket IDs and submission receipts, as Zerodha requires the signed form and clearance of dues to finalize closure.

Will I get a refund?

Account opening fee policy

Zerodha’s account opening fee for resident individual accounts is generally non-refundable under normal circumstances.

As of 29 June 2024, online account opening for resident individuals is free for Equity + F&O accounts (see official policy).

Exceptions and timelines

A refund may be requested if Zerodha fails to open the account within 10 working days after receiving all required documents.

Multiple or duplicate payments can be refunded on raising a support ticket with proof; approved refunds are typically credited within 7 working days.

For details, see: Account opening refund policy (Zerodha Support).

Documentation checklist

For deactivation request

  • Completed deactivation (Kill Switch) form - signed or eSigned as instructed.
  • Support ticket reference and any courier tracking number, if applicable.

For permanent closure and refunds

  • Signed account closure form (include joint/minor/commodity forms if relevant).
  • Proof of KYC completion, PAN, Aadhaar as required, and proof of payment(s) if claiming refunds.
  • Cleared dues and proof of transfer/sale of holdings or Demat delivery instruction if needed.

Common mistakes

Submitting incomplete forms

Users often send unsigned or partially filled closure/deactivation forms which delays processing.

Always verify signatures, joint-holder signatures (if required), and that all fields are completed before sending.

Not clearing holdings or dues

Attempting closure without transferring shares or clearing margin/dues causes rejection or delay of the closure request.

Check for pending obligations such as unsettled trades, pledged securities, or AMC dues before submitting the closure form.
