Cancel Magshop: Easy Method

What is Magshop

Overview

Magshop is an online retailer that sells print and digital magazine subscriptions in New Zealand. It manages orders, deliveries and subscription billing for a range of magazine titles.

Services provided

Services include one-off purchases, prepaid subscriptions and recurring (auto‑renew) subscriptions via the Magshop website. Some publishers also offer digital apps through app stores.

How to cancel Magshop

Cancel a web auto-renew / direct debit subscription

  • Call Magshop on 0800 624 746 to request cancellation.
  • Or email magshop@magshop.co.nz with your name, order number and request to cancel.
  • Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period; you may receive one further delivery and must pay for it.

Cancel a prepaid (non-auto-renew) subscription

  • Email magshop@magshop.co.nz or call 0800 624 746 to give notice of cancellation.
  • Magshop will process your cancellation within five business days.
  • Due to delivery timing you may receive one further issue and will be charged for that delivery.

Cancel App Store / iTunes purchases

  • Manage and cancel subscriptions via your Apple ID settings on your device or at Apple's subscriptions page.
  • Magshop cannot cancel App Store purchases; Apple controls billing and refunds for those purchases.

Cancel Google Play purchases

  • Cancel subscriptions through your Google Play account settings.
  • Magshop does not document Google Play cancellations on the NZ site; follow Google Play support if needed: Google Play refunds & cancellations.

What happens when you cancel

Access and delivery

Cancelling a subscription stops future renewals but does not usually stop an in-transit delivery. You may still receive one final issue after cancellation.

If an issue was already scheduled for delivery, you are normally required to pay for that issue even after cancellation.

Billing and timing

For web auto‑renew/direct debit the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. For prepaid plans cancellations are processed within five business days.

Keep records of your cancellation request (email or call reference) in case of billing disputes.

Data and records

Magshop will retain order and contact records necessary for billing and customer service under their terms of use.

If you need data removed or have privacy concerns, contact Magshop and request information about their data handling practices.

Will I get a refund?

General change-of-mind policy

Magshop does not offer general refunds for change of mind on physical or digital purchases. Refunds for change of mind are at Magshop's discretion.

Always check the product listing and terms before purchasing if you think you may want a refund later.

Faulty, damaged or undelivered items

  • If a physical product is faulty, damaged or not delivered, you are entitled to remedies under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA).
  • Report undelivered items within six weeks for Magshop to investigate and consider remedies.

Auto-renew, gift cards and app purchases

  • Auto‑renew subscriptions: No refund where the user is in breach; if Magshop cancels not due to your fault, a pro‑rata refund for the unused portion may be available.
  • Gift cards and redemption codes are non‑refundable; if an order using a gift card is cancelled, credit may be returned as store credit only.
  • App Store purchases: request refunds directly from Apple; Magshop cannot process App Store billing refunds.

Your consumer rights in New Zealand

Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA)

Under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, you are entitled to a remedy if a product is faulty, damaged or not delivered as promised.

Remedies under the CGA can include repair, replacement or refund depending on the problem's nature and severity.

Change of mind and digital subscriptions

There is no statutory right to a change-of-mind refund under New Zealand law; Magshop's policy reflects this by generally refusing change-of-mind refunds.

Digital subscriptions are generally non‑refundable for change of mind, but the CGA may still apply for faults or non‑delivery of digital content.

Auto-renew and fairness

Even if you cancel auto‑renew, you may still be charged for an issue already scheduled for delivery. This is common practice but may be subject to dispute under fairness and contract law.

If you believe a charge is unfair or unauthorised, seek advice from consumer protection resources or your bank.

Customer experiences

Common complaints

Many customer reviews on public sites report difficulty cancelling online and say they were required to phone Magshop to cancel.

Complaints include ignored emails, long waits for responses, delayed or withheld refunds, and requests to give bank or card details by phone.

Other reported issues

Customers also report not receiving magazines despite payment and alleged unexpected price increases or poor transparency.

These recurring themes suggest keeping careful records of orders and cancellation attempts.

Documentation checklist

Required information

  • Full name used on the order
  • Order or subscription number (if available)
  • Email address and phone number on the account
  • Last delivery date and magazine title

Helpful supporting items

  • Payment method and last 4 digits of card (do not send full card details by email)
  • Screenshots of order confirmation, billing, or email exchanges
  • Call reference numbers or timestamps of cancellation attempts

Common mistakes

Assuming online cancellation is available

Many users expect to cancel subscriptions via a website account but find Magshop requires a phone call or email. Check confirmation after you cancel.

Do not assume a single call will be enough; ask for a reference and follow up in writing.

Not keeping proof of cancellation

Customers often lack evidence of cancellation and then face continued billing. Save emails, take note of call times and request written confirmation.

If Magshop continues billing after cancellation, use your documentation to dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer.

Contacting the wrong provider for app purchases

App Store and Google Play subscriptions are managed by Apple or Google, not Magshop. Asking Magshop to refund App Store charges will usually be unsuccessful.

Use Apple or Google support channels for app refunds and cancellations to avoid delays.
