Cancellation Sizwe: Easy Method
What is Sizwe
Overview
Sizwe (Sizwe Hosmed Medical Scheme) is a South African medical scheme offering a range of plans that cover hospitalisation, consultations and other healthcare costs for members and dependants.
The Scheme operates on a subscription basis with monthly contributions, medical-savings components on some options, and regulated benefits under the Medical Schemes Act.
Who it serves
Sizwe serves individual and employer groups with multiple plan tiers, from entry-level hospital cover to higher benefit options for broader cover.
Membership terms, refunds and dispute procedures are governed by the Scheme rules and South African medical-scheme law.
How to cancel Sizwe
Standard cancellation steps
- Give one calendar month’s written notice to terminate your membership; this is a Scheme requirement.
- Continue to pay contributions during the full notice period; benefits remain until the effective date of termination.
- Submit your written notice to the Scheme’s membership or head-office address (see Address section below).
Special-case and timing details
- Follow-up in writing if you send notice by email or post; keep proof of delivery or sent email confirmations.
- Special exemption: IMATU‑represented municipal workers were allowed to terminate membership effective 1 December 2025 if one month’s written notice was given by 31 October 2025 due to the Scheme’s loss of accreditation and curatorship. IMATU notice
What happens when you cancel
Access to benefits
You retain Scheme benefits until the end of the paid notice period; cover does not end the moment you submit a termination letter.
Contributions must be paid up to the effective termination date to keep benefits active through that date.
Records and data
The Scheme will update membership records and prepare any required final statements, including Medical Savings Account (MSA) balances if applicable.
Keep copies of your termination notice and any correspondence for future proof or disputes.
Will I get a refund?
General policy
Sizwe does not refund contributions or provide no‑claim bonuses or rebates; this aligns with section 56 of the Medical Schemes Act, 1998.
Contributions remain payable until the effective date of termination; there is no refund for paid contributions outside specific MSA rules.
MSA (Medical Savings Account) exceptions
- MSA balances are refundable if your membership is terminated and is not transferred to another MSA‑enabled option.
- Refunds of MSA funds are processed within five (5) months of termination and are subject to applicable taxation rules. See the Scheme benefit guide for detail. Benefit guide

Documentation checklist
Essential documents to prepare
- Written termination letter with your full name, membership number, effective termination date, and signature.
- Proof of delivery (registered post receipt) or email confirmation if sent electronically.
- Any outstanding payment receipts for contributions paid to date.
Documents for refunds and transfers

- Documentation of any claims in process that you want finalised before termination.
Common mistakes
Missing or unclear notice
Sending a verbal or incomplete notice is a frequent issue. Always provide a clear written notice that states the termination date and includes your signature.

Only MSA balances (where applicable) are refundable on termination and subject to processing time and tax. See the Scheme FAQ for confirmation. Scheme FAQ
