Cancellation Backblaze: Easy Method
What is Backblaze
Backblaze is a cloud backup and object-storage provider that offers unlimited, continuous computer backup (Backblaze Computer Backup) and B2 cloud storage for files, snapshots and large data sets. It is commonly used to protect personal and business data by automatically uploading files to Backblaze’s servers and (for B2) providing pay-as-you-go storage and optional snapshot/restore services.
The service is managed through a web account and client applications on your devices; subscriptions may also be purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play for mobile-based transactions.
How to cancel Backblaze
- Web (Backblaze account): Sign in to your Backblaze account, remove/delete all backup computers and any unused licenses, then turn off or cancel the active subscription. Backblaze support states they cannot cancel an Online Backup subscription on your behalf; after cancelling you may optionally delete your account entirely. See Backblaze’s account cancellation help for step-by-step guidance: Backblaze Help Center.
- App Store (iOS) / Google Play (Android): If you subscribed via Apple or Google Play, manage and cancel the subscription through Apple’s or Google’s subscription manager (Backblaze does not document its own in-app cancellation flow). For Apple: Manage subscriptions on iPhone or iPad. For Google Play: Cancel subscriptions from Google Play.
What happens when you cancel
Cancellation typically stops future billing and prevents automatic renewal. Access to the Backblaze service and your stored backups generally continues for the remainder of any paid period, but behaviour can vary by how the subscription was purchased (direct vs. App Store/Google Play). If you delete backup computers or delete your account, the backups associated with those computers will be removed and become unrecoverable unless you download/export the data first.
For B2 users, stored data remains on the service until you remove it, but you should confirm how retention and billing are handled after cancellation. Always export or download any data you need before permanently deleting computers, snapshots or your account.
Will I get a refund?
Backblaze’s published refund rules are: monthly Backblaze Computer Backup plans are not refundable (you may cancel to stop future charges but will not receive a prorated refund); yearly and two‑year backup plans are eligible for a full refund if requested within 30 days of subscribing; and physical USB restore drives or B2 Snapshot drives are refundable if returned within 30 days of receipt subject to conditions. Refunds for returned restore drives require you to pay return shipping and any duties or taxes, are limited (e.g. to five returns per 12 months), and are issued back to the original payment method.
If you purchased through Apple or Google Play, refunds and their rules are controlled by Apple/Google and their respective refund processes.

Your consumer rights in Canada
Canadian consumer protection laws vary by province and can provide statutory cooling‑off, cancellation and refund rights that differ from a company’s published policy. Backblaze’s public policies are U.S.‑centric and do not explicitly state how they interact with Canadian provincial rules (for example Quebec or other provinces with specific online‑sales protections).
This means you may have additional rights under federal or provincial law beyond Backblaze’s stated refunds and returns policy. If you believe Backblaze’s stated policy conflicts with local consumer law, preserve receipts and communications, and consider contacting your provincial consumer protection office or seeking legal advice. Where purchases were made through Apple or Google, their refund processes and legal obligations may also apply.
Customer experiences
Public reviews are mixed. Some users (for example B2 and business users on review platforms) praise Backblaze for ease of use, background operation, value for money and clear documentation. Others report problems such as difficulties obtaining refunds, delays or poor responsiveness from support, errors during restore operations, confusion around cancellation, and cases where users say remaining subscription time was lost after they attempted to cancel.
These experiences indicate that while many customers find Backblaze reliable for automated backups, others encounter friction around billing, restores and support - so keeping clear records and following documented cancellation steps is important.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and Backblaze account ID
- Subscription receipts or order numbers and purchase date
- List of backup computers/devices (hostnames or IDs) and licenses
- Proof of cancellation or support case numbers
- Tracking numbers, photos and customs receipts if returning a USB/B2 Snapshot drive
- Any communication with Backblaze or App Store/Google Play about the subscription
Common mistakes
One frequent error is attempting to cancel without first removing all backup computers and unused licenses - Backblaze requires those deletions for certain cancellation flows, and support has stated they cannot cancel an Online Backup subscription on a customer’s behalf. Another common issue is assuming monthly subscriptions are refundable - Backblaze’s published policy disallows refunds on monthly plans. Timing is also important: for annual or two‑year refunds generally you must request within 30 days, and physical restore drives must be returned within 30 days to be eligible for a refund (customers pay return shipping and duties).
Finally, confusion over purchase channel (direct vs. App Store vs. Google Play) can lead to the wrong cancellation path being used - use the same provider you used to buy the subscription.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Web (Backblaze account) | Monthly: no; Yearly/Two‑year: full refund if requested within 30 days | Moderate - must sign in, delete backup computers and unused licenses; support cannot cancel for you |
| App Store (iOS) | Refunds handled by Apple under Apple policy | Low - Moderate - cancel via Apple subscriptions; refund via Apple support |
| Google Play (Android) | Refunds handled by Google under Google Play policy | Low - Moderate - cancel via Google Play subscriptions; refund via Google Play support |
| USB Restore / B2 Snapshot Drive return | Refund if returned within 30 days of receipt; customer pays return shipping, duties; limited returns per 12 months | Moderate - High - requires shipping, paperwork and potential customs fees |
After cancelling
Before you complete cancellation, export or download any files you may need and confirm you have local copies of important data. If you used a physical restore drive and intend to return it for a refund, package it carefully, keep tracking and proof of delivery, and pay any required duties so the return meets Backblaze’s refund conditions.
