Cancellation Medium: Easy Method
What is Medium
Medium is an online publishing platform where writers and publications share articles, essays and stories. It offers a mix of free and subscriber‑only (paywalled) content; a paid membership grants access to publications and curator features across the site and apps.
How to cancel Medium
- On the web (medium.com): Sign in at medium.com, go to Settings → Membership section → click “Cancel your membership.” You will retain access until the end of your current billing cycle. See Trouble canceling membership for details.
- If you subscribed via Apple App Store (iOS): On your iPhone or iPad open Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → select your Medium membership → tap Cancel subscription. Note that uninstalling the app or deleting your Medium account does not cancel an App Store subscription. See Medium help.
- If you subscribed via Google Play Store (Android): Open the Google Play Store → menu or profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → select Medium → tap Cancel subscription. Deleting the app or your Medium account will not cancel Google Play billing. See Medium help.
- Requesting cancellation via support: You may also contact Medium support (for example by using Help Center forms or emailing yourfriends@medium.com) to request cancellation, but access continues until the end of the billing period. For membership terms see Membership Terms of Service.
What happens when you cancel
Cancelling stops future renewals: your paid membership will remain active until the end of the current billing cycle, after which you will lose subscriber access to paywalled content. Your account and any free content you published remain, but you will no longer be billed. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, the provider continues to handle billing until expiry and you must cancel through that store to prevent renewal. Deleting the app or the Medium account does not automatically cancel store‑based subscriptions.
Will I get a refund?
Medium’s stated policy is that subscription fees are final and non‑refundable; cancelling prevents future charges but does not produce a refund for unused days. There is no blanket 14‑day cooling‑off/refund right in Medium’s publicly posted terms. Refunds may be issued only at Medium’s discretion in exceptional cases. If you believe a charge is unauthorized or deceptive, you can also contact your payment provider to discuss a chargeback or dispute.

Your consumer rights in Canada
Under Canadian consumer protection norms, digital subscription services should provide clear cancellation methods and transparent terms. There is no automatic federal 14‑day refund right for digital subscriptions unless a provider promises one in their terms; provincial rules vary. Medium’s non‑refundable policy and cancellation effective at the next billing cycle are common, though you may challenge charges if you believe they were unauthorized, misleading or in breach of provincial consumer laws. In such cases contact your card issuer or payment provider to ask about disputing a charge, and consider reaching out to provincial consumer protection authorities for guidance.
Customer experiences
Users report a mix of positives and negatives: many praise Medium’s clean, distraction‑free interface and the writing/publishing tools, finding it strong for serious writers. On the other hand, common complaints include increasing amounts of paywalled content, perceived commercialization, occasional unresponsive customer support, account suspensions without clear appeal paths, and concerns about transparency in content curation and marketing. These experiences vary by user and over time.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and username;
- Subscription receipt or order confirmation (email or screenshot);
- Payment method details (last four digits of card, PayPal email, or proof of App Store/Google Play subscription);
- Screenshots showing active subscription status and cancellation screens (if any);
- Any correspondence with Medium support (timestamps and copies);
- If sending written notice by post, proof of sending/receipt (registered mail return receipt).
Common mistakes
Avoid these frequent errors: cancelling only by deleting the app or your Medium account while your billing is handled through Apple or Google - these actions do not stop store subscriptions; assuming a refund is automatic after cancellation - Medium’s terms say fees are final; and failing to keep receipts or screenshots when contacting support. For example, a user who deleted the Medium app but did not cancel their App Store subscription continued being billed until cancelling via Apple subscriptions.

After cancelling
After you cancel, keep your confirmation (screenshots or emails) showing the cancellation and expiry date. If you need help, use the Medium Help Center: https://help.medium.com and the cancellation guidance at Trouble canceling membership. For disputes about unauthorized charges, contact your payment provider or card issuer promptly. If you send written notices or documents to Medium, using registered mail with return receipt (raccomandata A/R) can provide proof of delivery; keep copies of everything you send.
