Cancellation Fatcow: Easy Method
What is Fatcow
FatCow is a web hosting provider offering shared hosting, VPS and dedicated server plans, domain registration and related services. It provides web-based account and billing management through a control panel and a Renewal Center, with customer support primarily via online channels.
How to cancel Fatcow
- Web / Control Panel - Log in to your FatCow account, open the Renewal Center in the Control Panel and disable auto-renewal at least 16 calendar days before the end of your current term; if you miss that window your payment method on file may be charged.
- Phone or Chat - You may request cancellation via FatCow phone or live chat; expect identity verification and a confirmation from the agent. Keep the cancellation reference or transcript.
- Postal mail (recommended for a paper trail) - Send a signed written cancellation request (prefer registered/rec'd-return service such as raccomandata A/R) to the corporate office at the address below; include your account email, account ID and a clear statement you want the account cancelled and any auto-renewals stopped.
- Important - Cancellation typically results in permanent removal of account data; always back up files and emails before cancelling and retain documentation of your cancellation request and any confirmations.
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel a FatCow hosting account your access to hosting services is terminated and any scheduled auto-renewals are stopped (provided the cancellation is processed before renewal). FatCow’s process requires verification, and once cancellation is completed your hosting data and emails can be permanently removed. Domains and add-ons may be handled separately; domain registration fees and transfer policies may still apply and domain transfers should be initiated before account termination if you want to keep a domain.
Will I get a refund?
FatCow offers a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee for basic hosting only. If you cancel within the first 30 days of the Initial Term you may receive a full refund of basic hosting fees (domain, setup and add-on fees are excluded), provided the payment was made by credit card or PayPal and it is your first FatCow hosting account; a standard CA$15 domain fee will be deducted if you keep the domain. No refunds are provided for cancellations made after 30 calendar days following purchase. Fees for professional services are generally non-refundable unless FatCow terminates the agreement for reasons not related to your breach - in that case a prorated refund for the unused portion may be considered.

Your consumer rights in Canada
Under Canadian consumer protection rules, businesses must clearly disclose auto-renewal terms and provide fair, accessible cancellation processes and applicable refunds. The 30-day money-back guarantee for basic hosting aligns with common protections, but unclear disclosure about auto-renewal, lack of accessible cancellation paths or persistent billing disputes may trigger concerns under laws against unfair business practices and deceptive representations. Keep records of any charges, cancellation attempts and communications; if you believe the provider has breached disclosure or billing rules you can contact your provincial consumer protection office or, for domain or cross-border issues, consider lodging a complaint with relevant authorities.
Customer experiences
Public reviews and complaints frequently cite problems with unexpected automated charges (including reports of charges after auto-renewal was supposedly disabled), long or difficult cancellation processes, and limited or poor customer support. Some customers report loss of email or site data and difficulties transferring domains after cancellation. Positive reports are less common in the available data; users who successfully cancel early and keep documentation report smoother outcomes. Given the mix of complaints, maintaining backups and documentation is strongly advised.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and username
- Account ID or customer number
- Domain name(s) associated with the account
- Recent invoices and proof of payment (credit card/PayPal receipts)
- Screenshots or transcripts of account settings showing auto-renewal status
- Chat transcripts, cancellation confirmation numbers, or agent names
- Registered postal delivery receipt if sending a mailed cancellation request
Common mistakes
Many problems stem from missing key deadlines (for example, not disabling auto-renewal at least 16 days before term end), assuming app stores manage subscriptions when FatCow billing is web-based, or failing to keep backups before cancellation. Another frequent mistake is not retaining proof of cancellation or any correspondence; without documentation it is harder to dispute unexpected charges. Also, waiting too long to request domain transfers can result in losing control of the domain once the hosting account is closed.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Web / Control Panel (Renewal Center) | Possible within 30 days for basic hosting (subject to exclusions and first-account rules) | Moderate - must disable 16 days before term end; follow-up documentation advised |
| Phone / Live Chat | Same refund framework applies; request confirmation and keep transcript | High for some users - reports of poor service and unresolved issues |
| Postal Mail (registered) | Same refund framework applies; provides a paper trail which can help dispute billing | Moderate to High - slower but recommended when other channels fail |
After cancelling
After you cancel, keep all confirmation emails, chat transcripts and delivery receipts. Ensure you have local backups of all website files, databases and email you need before the cancellation is processed. If you need to transfer a domain, start the transfer before account termination and check domain lock and WHOIS contact details. For further support or to find documentation, start at FatCow’s main site and help pages: FatCow home and FatCow Help. If you encounter unresolved billing or disclosure issues in Canada, consider contacting your provincial consumer protection agency.
