Cancellation Monzo: Simple Process
What is Monzo
Overview
Monzo is a UK-based digital bank that provides app-first banking services, including current accounts, debit cards, budgeting tools and optional paid plans. It is designed primarily for UK residents and operates under UK banking rules.
Availability
Monzo accounts require UK residency and cannot be opened from India. Existing Monzo cards may be used in India for purchases and ATM withdrawals, subject to the card network and Monzo’s international rules.
How to cancel Monzo
Canceling a paid plan or subscription
- Open the Monzo app and go to Settings or your Profile section.
- Find Subscriptions or the specific plan (Plus, Premium, Perks, Max, Extra) and choose Cancel.
- Follow the in-app prompts to confirm cancellation and note any minimum term or cooling-off conditions.
Closing your Monzo account
- Cancel any active subscriptions in-app first.
- Clear any fixed-term Pots and bring your account balance to zero.
- Then close the account from Settings or Profile; Monzo will email a PDF statement and final confirmation. See Monzo help for closing steps: Close your account.
What happens when you cancel
Access and product changes
Cancelling a paid plan removes the benefits tied to that plan at the end of your billing period or as specified by Monzo. Access to app features may change based on your remaining plan or standard account features.
Account closure and records
After you close your account you will receive an email with a PDF statement. Monzo may keep records as required by law and Monzo’s policies; you may be able to re-open within a set period but checks will apply.
Will I get a refund?
Subscription refunds and exceptions
Refund rules for Plus, Premium, Perks and similar plans vary by product. Some products have minimum initial terms; after those terms, cancellations are usually free and may result in a prorated refund of the monthly fee.
There can be a short cooling-off period where different rules or fees apply; examples reported include fees associated with returning physical items like metal cards.
Merchant and banking refunds
Refunds for card purchases depend on the merchant. Monzo typically shows a merchant refund in your account 5 - 6 days after the merchant processes it.
If a refund does not arrive you can raise a dispute within the Monzo app. Some refunds (e.g., hotel or rental deposits) may take longer, sometimes up to 30 days. See Monzo guidance on refunds: Refund timing.
Monzo plans and pricing
Plans overview
Monzo offers paid plans such as Premium, Plus, Perks, Max and Extra in the UK. Pricing and features can differ by market and plan terms.
Pricing for India
Monzo does not publish official pricing in India because Monzo accounts require UK residency and Monzo does not operate local INR pricing. For pricing inquiries contact Monzo support via the app.
| Plan | Price (INR) | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Contact for pricing | Contact |
| Plus | Contact for pricing | Contact |
| Perks | Contact for pricing | Contact |
| Max / Extra | Contact for pricing | Contact |
Your consumer rights in India
Regulatory scope
Monzo is a UK bank and is regulated under UK rules. Those UK consumer protections (FCA, etc.) do not extend as Indian law protections for services purchased from India.
Using Monzo cards in India
You may use an existing Monzo debit card in India for payments and ATM withdrawals, but Monzo does not support international card delivery to India. See Monzo’s international card guidance: International card delivery.
Guidance on using Monzo in India is available from travel/finance resources; for example, Wise outlines limits and ATM fee thresholds when using UK cards abroad: Can I use Monzo in India?.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
Many users praise Monzo’s app for ease of use, budgeting tools, instant notifications and competitive exchange rates when travelling.
Several reviews highlight quick dispute resolution and straightforward refund handling in typical merchant refund scenarios. See user reviews: Trustpilot summary.
Negative feedback
Other users report problems with customer support, app reliability, account access after device changes, and difficulty resolving certain disputes.
Review sites collect these varied experiences; read balanced feedback on review platforms: Reviews.io.
Documentation checklist
Before cancelling a plan
- Have the Monzo app logged in and confirm plan name and billing cycle.
- Record any important receipts or statements related to the plan benefits.
Before closing your account
- Cancel all subscriptions in-app and confirm cancellation emails or messages.
- Empty fixed-term Pots, withdraw funds and bring your balance to zero.
- Keep a copy of the final PDF statement Monzo sends after closure.
Common mistakes
Leaving subscriptions active
Some users try to close their account without cancelling paid plans first. This can block closure or cause unexpected renewals.
Always cancel subscriptions in the app and confirm the plan shows as cancelled before proceeding to close the account.
Assuming Indian consumer protections apply
Because Monzo is a UK bank, customers in India do not get Indian banking protections for account opening or local regulatory coverage. Expect UK-based rules to govern disputes and reimbursement frameworks.
Also do not assume cards can be reissued or accounts opened from India; Monzo does not support account opening from India.
Comparative recap
At a glance
This table compares key differences to help decide whether to keep or cancel Monzo when in India or considering alternatives.

|---|---|---|
| Account opening from India | Not supported; UK residency required. | Supported for residents; local KYC and branchless options available. |
| Use in India | Card works for payments and ATMs; limits and fees apply. | Native INR accounts and local customer support. |
| Consumer protection | Governed by UK rules (does not extend to Indian jurisdiction). | Regulated by RBI and Indian consumer law for local accounts. |
