Cancellation Moneris: Easy Method
What is Moneris
Overview
Moneris is a payments processor that enables merchants to accept card and digital payments and manage transactions through web portals and terminals.
It provides online payment requests, dashboards, and refund tools used by merchants to collect and manage customer payments.
Services relevant to cancellation
Moneris offers a "Payment Request" feature in the Moneris Go portal that lets merchants send and cancel payment requests.
Refunds and transaction management are available in the Moneris Dashboard and Buddi tools for admin-enabled merchant users.
How to cancel Moneris
Cancel a payment request in Moneris Go
- Sign in to the Moneris Go portal where the payment request was created.
- Locate the payment request with status "Sent", "Overdue", or "Pending".
- Select the payment request and choose the cancel option to deactivate it; the status will update to "Cancelled".
- Confirm cancellation and notify the customer if needed.
When to use cancellation vs. void or refund
- Cancel: use for active payment requests that have not been completed by the customer.
- Void: use for an unsettled purchase or capture before the batch is closed.
- Refund: use only after the transaction has settled and is in a closed batch.
For step-by-step guidance on cancelling payment requests, see Moneris help: Cancelling a payment request.
What happens when you cancel
Account and request status
Cancelling a Moneris payment request deactivates that request and changes its status to "Cancelled".
The customer will no longer be able to complete the cancelled request through the original link or message.
Data and records
Cancellations are recorded in the merchant portal for reconciliation and auditing purposes.
Transaction history and cancellation records remain accessible in the dashboard but the payment request cannot be reused once cancelled.
Will I get a refund?
Refund eligibility
Refunds are only possible for transactions that have completed a Purchase or Capture and are in a closed batch.
If the associated batch is still open, the transaction cannot be refunded and must be voided instead.
Timing and exceptions
- Admin-enabled merchants can process full or partial refunds up to the settled amount via Moneris Dashboard or Buddi once transactions are settled.
- Once a refund transaction is batched, funds may take up to 10 days to appear on the customer’s card statement.
- If a refund is attempted while the batch is open, use a void instead; refunds must reference a completed Purchase or Capture in a closed batch.
For Moneris refund procedures see: Moneris refunds (Buddi) and Terminal refund help.

Issuer and network rules
- Under Mastercard recurring billing compliance, merchants must email an enrollment confirmation with terms and cancellation instructions and provide an electronic cancellation option.
- Terms and cancellation methods must be disclosed at the time of payment enrollment.
Refund authorisation requirements
- As of October 2025, Mastercard requires refund transactions to be authorised by the issuer; if a refund is declined, merchants must offer alternatives such as store credit or refund to another card of the same brand.
- Merchants should ensure refund workflows follow card network and acquirer rules to avoid declines.
See Moneris compliance notices for details: Moneris compliance notices.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
Customers commonly praise Moneris for efficient, friendly support, ease of use, and reliable online management tools.
Merchants note helpful account setup assistance and stable transaction processing.
Negative feedback
Some users report occasional unexpected charges and concerns about fee transparency.
Review platforms show mixed experiences; verify pricing and terms before committing.
For user reviews, see: Moneris on Trustpilot.
Documentation checklist
Before cancelling a payment request
- Merchant account ID and login credentials for Moneris Go or Dashboard.
- Payment request ID or invoice number associated with the request.
- Customer contact information to notify about cancellation.
Before processing refunds or voids
- Original transaction ID and batch status (open or closed).
- Amount to refund (partial refunds are allowed up to the settled amount).
- Proof of settlement if required for reconciliation.
Common mistakes
Attempting refunds on open batches
A common error is trying to issue a refund before the original transaction batch is closed.
When the batch is still open the correct action is to void the transaction, not refund it.
Not documenting cancellations or communicating with customers
Failing to record cancellations or notify customers can lead to confusion and disputes.
Keep clear records and send a confirmation email with cancellation details and next steps for the customer.
Comparative recap
At-a-glance differences
The table below compares common actions (Cancel, Void, Refund) and when to use each one.
Quick decision guide
| Action | When to use | Requires batch status | Result for customer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel (Payment Request) | Payment request not completed by customer | Not applicable | Request deactivated; status becomes "Cancelled" |
| Void | Transaction authorized but batch still open | Batch must be open (void before settlement) | Transaction reversed before settlement; no refund posted |
| Refund | Transaction settled and in closed batch | Batch must be closed (settled) | Funds returned to card; may take up to 10 days to appear |
