Cancel Backblaze: Easy Method
What is Backblaze
Service overview
Backblaze is a cloud backup and object storage provider offering Personal Online Backup for computers and B2 Cloud Storage for developers and businesses.
Primary uses
Individuals use Backblaze for unlimited-per-computer backups and easy restores. Businesses and developers use B2 for pay-as-you-go object storage and integrations with other tools.
How to cancel Backblaze
Personal Online Backup cancellation steps
- Sign into your Backblaze account on the Backblaze website.
- For each computer, delete the registered backup via Preferences → Delete Backup.
- Delete the computer’s license via Overview → Delete License to finish cancellation.
- Support representatives cannot cancel the account for you; you must perform these steps yourself.
- See Backblaze help: Canceling an account.
B2 Cloud Storage and other notes
- To stop B2 billing, delete all buckets (and their contents) and remove any application keys before leaving the service.
- After buckets and keys are removed, you may delete your Backblaze account if desired.
- There is no in-app “click-to-cancel” via the App Store or Google Play; cancellation is handled on Backblaze’s website.
What happens when you cancel
Access and data deletion
For Personal Online Backup, deleting a backup and license immediately and irreversibly deletes the stored backup data.
For B2, deleting buckets removes all stored objects; this action is permanent unless you have copies elsewhere.
Billing and account status
Cancelling does not automatically issue refunds (see refund rules below). Your account will stop backing up after the license is deleted.
If you wish to remove your account entirely after clearing B2 buckets and keys, you may delete the account via the web interface.
Will I get a refund?
Monthly plans
- No refunds are issued for monthly Personal Backup plans; you may cancel at any time but will not receive a refund for the current month.
Annual and two-year plans, and disputes
- For 1-year or 2-year Personal Backup plans, you may request a full refund within 30 days of subscribing.
- Charge disputes for any plan type can be filed up to 45 days after the charge date.
- See Backblaze refund policy: Refunds.

Your consumer rights in New Zealand
Key protections
- Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, digital services must be of acceptable quality and fit for purpose.
- If the service is defective or misrepresented, remedies may be available beyond provider refund policies.
Cancellation and fairness
- Requirements that force deletion of all data to cancel, or that make cancellation difficult, may be considered unfair under the Fair Trading Act.
- Users have the right to clear and accessible cancellation mechanisms; an overly burdensome web-only multi-step process could be challenged.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
- Users praise ease of use, reliable long-term backups, fast uploads, and simple restore options; see reviews on Capterra, SoftwareAdvice, and Reddit.
- Backblaze B2 is highly rated for cost-effectiveness and straightforward pricing among many users.
Negative feedback
- Complaints include backups stopping unexpectedly, difficulty cancelling, unsatisfactory restore experiences, and slow or unhelpful support.
- Trustpilot and Reddit contain examples of users reporting cancellation difficulties and technical issues; review pages include: Trustpilot NZ, Capterra NZ, and Reddit.
Documentation checklist
Before you start cancelling
- Account email address and Backblaze login credentials.
- List of registered computers and which backups you will delete.
- Local copies of any data you want to keep before deleting backups.
For refunds or disputes
- Proof of purchase or payment (receipt, credit-card statement).
- Screenshots showing subscription status, billing dates, or error messages.
- Record of support interactions if you plan to dispute performance or request remedies under NZ law.
Common mistakes
Expecting App Store or Play Store cancellation
Many users assume cancelling via the App Store or Google Play will stop Backblaze; this is incorrect.
Backblaze requires deletion of backups and licenses on its website; store-based cancellations do not complete the process.
Deleting the app but not the backup
Uninstalling the Backblaze app from your computer or device does not delete your backed-up data or license.
If you fail to delete backups and licenses via the web interface, your data and billing may remain active.
Comparative recap
At-a-glance comparison
| Aspect | Personal Backup | B2 Cloud Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel process | Delete each backup + delete license via web | Delete all buckets and application keys via web |
| Refunds | No refund for monthly; 30-day full refund for 1- or 2-year plans | Usage billed monthly; refunds depend on billing and usage agreements |
| Ease of cancellation | Multi-step, web-only; support cannot cancel for you | Requires manual deletion of buckets/keys; then optional account deletion |
| NZ consumer-friendliness | May raise concerns under NZ consumer laws if service fails or cancellation is burdensome | Same concerns apply if deletion requirements or billing practices are onerous |
After cancelling
What to do next
Ensure you have local copies of any data you deleted from Backblaze before proceeding; once deleted, backups are irretrievable.
Review your bank or card statements for any unexpected charges and note charge dates for potential disputes.
