Cancel Auckland Leisure: Easy Method
What is Auckland Leisure
Overview
Auckland Leisure is the public network of pools, gyms, classes and community programmes operated for Auckland residents. It provides memberships, casual entry, Learn to Swim lessons, holiday and recreation programmes, and multi-visit passes.
Who it serves
Services are aimed at the general public including families, adults, and children learning to swim. Facilities range from full-service centres to single-site gym access options.
How to cancel Auckland Leisure
Primary cancellation methods
- You must provide written notice to cancel - cancellations cannot be completed via the myLEISURE online portal or app.
- Email cancellations to: aucklandleisure@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
- Alternatively, deliver a written cancellation to your local leisure centre if that is accepted by the centre.
Step-by-step cancellation steps
- Locate your membership or booking details (membership number, name, centre).
- Write a clear cancellation request including your name, membership number, centre, and desired cancellation date.
- Send the request by email or to the centre in writing and keep a copy for your records.
- Allow the required notice period (see next section) and confirm receipt with the centre or central team.
What happens when you cancel
Access and effective date
Cancellations require notice. Your access will continue for the length of the required notice and then end on the stated cancellation date.
Renewal and records
Auto-renewal or recurring payments will stop once the cancellation is processed. Auckland Leisure will retain membership records in line with its policies.
Will I get a refund?
General refund policy
Memberships are not refundable simply because you did not use the service. Non-use is not a ground for refund under Auckland Leisure membership terms.
Exceptions and programme rules
- 10-visit passes are non-refundable and expire 12 months after purchase; unused visits are forfeited.
- Holiday & recreation programmes: no refunds once the programme has commenced. If you cancel before the programme starts, a refund may be issued only if your spot can be resold; refunds take up to 10 working days and are by direct credit (not cash).
- Learn to Swim programmes: roll-over occurs unless you cancel. You may cancel with 10 business days' notice via form or email; cancelling with less notice results in continuation.
- Medical exception: membership cancellation without penalty may be allowed for diagnosed illness preventing use, subject to a medical certificate.

Your consumer rights in New Zealand
Legal protections
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act you have rights if services are not provided as promised or are unsafe. These laws operate in addition to Auckland Leisure’s own terms.
How this affects cancellations and refunds
- Auckland Leisure’s “no refund for non-use” term does not override statutory consumer rights where a service is not delivered as described, unsafe, or unfit for purpose.
- If facilities or services materially fail, you may have remedies under New Zealand consumer law and should raise the issue promptly.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
- Users report good value when using both pools and gym facilities, with clean, quieter-than-private-gym environments.
- Specific praise for centres such as Glenfield Leisure mentions a broad range of facilities and long opening hours.
Negative feedback
- Complaints include cold pools, reduced lane availability due to staffing, maintenance-related closures, and hygiene or behaviour concerns in some pools.
- Some centres are said to need upgrades or have confusing timetables for lane access; equipment or areas at certain centres may be closed for maintenance.
Documentation checklist
What to include with a cancellation
- Your full name, membership number and centre/site name.
- Clear statement of cancellation and the desired cancellation effective date.
- Contact details (phone and email) and a copy of the membership card if available.
Additional paperwork for exceptions
- Medical certificate if claiming cancellation due to diagnosed illness.
- Booking reference or programme details for Learn to Swim or holiday programme cancellations.
- Bank details for direct credit refunds where applicable.
Common mistakes
Trying to cancel through the wrong channel
Many members assume myLEISURE or app-based account pages can process cancellations. These portals do not support cancellations; you must email or write to the centre.
Missing the notice period and refund assumptions
Failing to provide at least the required notice (typically 10 days) often means the membership or class will continue. Expecting refunds for non-use or for programmes after they have started is another common misunderstanding.
