Cancellation Digitalocean: Easy Method
What is Digitalocean
DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider that offers virtual machines (Droplets), managed databases, object storage, and developer-focused platform services such as App Platform. It targets developers and small-to-medium businesses with simple plans, clear pricing, and documentation for deploying and managing cloud workloads.
How to cancel Digitalocean
- Via the web (DigitalOcean account): Sign in to the Control Panel, go to your account/billing settings, follow the account cancellation or close-account flow and confirm. Make sure to destroy any active Droplets, volumes, or services before closing to stop further billing and to preserve any data you need.
- Via App Store (iOS): DigitalOcean does not document an App Store cancellation flow. If you subscribed through Apple, cancel and request refunds using Apple’s App Store subscription tools (follow Apple’s support processes).
- Via Google Play (Android): If you purchased or subscribed via Google Play, cancel the subscription through your Google Play account subscriptions page and follow Google’s refund/request flow.
- By registered mail (optional legal notice): If you prefer a written cancellation notice, send a signed, registered letter (raccomandata A/R) to the Legal Department (see Address section). Keep tracking and the return receipt as proof of delivery.
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel, DigitalOcean inactivates your account and you lose access to the Control Panel and hosted resources. Services stop renewing, but you should explicitly destroy Droplets, volumes, databases, snapshots, and other resources before or immediately after cancelling if you want to remove them - otherwise you may remain responsible for charges if associated resources remain active. Cancellation may also make stored data inaccessible; DigitalOcean does not guarantee retained backups after account closure, so export or back up any data you need before cancelling.
Will I get a refund?
DigitalOcean’s published position is “We do not offer refunds.” The Terms of Service allow a narrow exception: if you prepaid for service beyond the first month and startup costs, a pro‑rata refund for remaining time beyond the first month may be possible. For other circumstances, refunds are not guaranteed, though you can contact support to request assistance for extenuating circumstances. For platform purchases (App Store or Google Play), refunds and dispute processes are handled by those platforms.
Digitalocean plans and pricing
| Plan | Price (approx.) | Period | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Droplet - Shared CPU (1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer) | C$6.65 / month (approx.) | Monthly | Shared CPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB SSD, 1 TB outbound transfer |
| Basic Droplet - Shared CPU (2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB SSD, 2 TB transfer) | C$16.00 / month (approx.) | Monthly | Shared CPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD, 2 TB outbound transfer |
| General Purpose Droplet - Dedicated CPU (4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs) | C$48.00 / month (approx.) | Monthly | Dedicated CPU, 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs |

Your consumer rights in Canada
Canadian consumer protection includes cooling‑off and refund rules in some distance‑sale situations, but DigitalOcean’s published policy does not provide a general 14‑day right to a refund. For purchases made through Apple or Google, platform refund processes may apply and you should request refunds via the respective platform. If you experience post‑cancellation charges or services that were paid for but not rendered, you may have recourse through your card issuer (chargeback) or through provincial consumer protection authorities - keep documentation and timestamps for any dispute.
Customer experiences
Many users praise DigitalOcean for ease of use, clear pricing, thorough documentation, and fast, helpful support in routine matters. At the same time, negative reports include continued billing after cancellation, sudden account suspensions or IP blocks with limited warning (sometimes caused by missed emails), slow response for urgent incidents, and in rare cases data loss following billing failures or suspension. These mixed experiences mean it’s important to secure backups, export invoices, and capture cancellation confirmations.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and username, invoices and receipts, payment method details
- Copies/screenshots of cancellation confirmation, support ticket IDs, and any correspondence
- Backups or exports of data, database dumps, and snapshots before cancelling
- If sending registered mail: tracking number and return‑receipt (raccomandata A/R)
Common mistakes
Common mistakes include assuming cancellation alone stops all resources (failing to destroy Droplets, volumes, or backups can result in ongoing charges), expecting an automatic refund, not saving a copy of the cancellation confirmation or support tickets, and overlooking emails from DigitalOcean that may have gone to spam (important notices about suspensions or billing often arrive by email). Another frequent error is confusing subscription channels - if you subscribed through Apple or Google, you must manage cancellation and refund requests through those platforms, not only via the DigitalOcean Control Panel.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Web (DigitalOcean account) | No general refunds; pro‑rata refund possible only for prepayment beyond the first month per Terms | Easy - Moderate (control panel available; ensure resources destroyed) |
| App Store (iOS) | Refunds handled by Apple’s App Store policies and processes | Moderate (requires Apple account/subscription management) |
| Google Play (Android) | Refunds handled by Google Play’s subscription/refund process | Moderate (manage via Google Play account) |
| Registered mail to Legal Department | Serves as written notice/proof; refunds governed by DigitalOcean policy (same limitations) | Moderate - High (slower, but provides physical proof of notice) |
After cancelling
After you cancel, verify you received a cancellation confirmation and download or export invoices, logs, and any required data immediately. If you believe you are owed a pro‑rata refund or need assistance, open a support ticket and reference your account, invoice numbers, and any prepayment details; you can also appeal for extenuating circumstances through support. For platform purchases, submit refund requests through Apple or Google as applicable.
