Cancellation Route: Step-by-Step Guide
What is Route
Route is a package protection and order‑tracking service merchants offer at checkout. It provides protection and claims handling for lost, stolen, or damaged packages, integrates with some retailers' web checkouts and mobile apps, and may be purchased as an in‑app upgrade on iOS or Android or directly through a merchant's website.
Route does not always control payment processing for purchases made through third‑party app stores; how you cancel or seek a refund depends on where you bought the protection (Google Play, App Store, or a merchant/web purchase).
How to cancel Route
- Identify where you bought Route (Google Play/Android, App Store/iOS, or a merchant/web checkout).
- If purchased via Google Play (Android): contact Route through their contact form and include the Google transaction number (the ID beginning with “GPA”). Route issues refunds to the original payment method when applicable.
- If purchased via the iOS App Store: request cancellation or a refund directly from Apple because Route does not have access to Apple’s transaction or payment processing; use Apple’s refund process.
- If purchased on Route’s website or directly through a merchant’s web checkout: submit a cancellation or refund request using Route’s designated cancellation page/form on their help site.
- For free trials bought in‑app, cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged; for legal or formal complaints you can send registered mail to Route’s Canadian address (see Address section).
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel a Route purchase or protection, access to the protection product or any in‑app benefits will stop according to the vendor’s timing and the point at which the cancellation is processed. If cancellation occurs before an upgrade or trial converts to a paid subscription, renewal will not occur.
If an order has already shipped and Route’s package protection is in effect, the protection premium is generally treated as used; Route considers the insurance active and the premium non‑refundable in many cases. Route and the merchant may retain transaction records for customer service, claims handling, and legal compliance.
Will I get a refund?
Canadian consumers generally have a statutory 14‑day "cooling‑off" right to cancel online purchases and receive a refund, but how that right applies to Route depends on how and when the product was purchased. If you cancel within the applicable cooling‑off window and the protection has not been used, you are typically eligible for a refund. For free trials bought in‑app, you must cancel before the trial ends.
Exceptions: once an order has shipped and Route’s package protection is active, the premium is commonly non‑refundable. Refunds issued after claims may be delivered via the original payment method or alternative methods offered by the retailer (PayPal, Venmo, prepaid Mastercard, or gift card), and Route’s premium may be excluded from certain claim refunds. Platform rules also affect refunds: Google Play refunds often involve the Google transaction number and Route, while iOS/App Store refunds are handled by Apple.

Your consumer rights in Canada
In Canada, consumers generally have a 14‑day cooling‑off period for many online purchases, allowing cancellation and a refund. This statutory right interacts with the seller’s and Route’s terms: for in‑app upgrades the cooling‑off window may be limited to the trial period, and once protection is in transit the premium is often non‑refundable. Refunds for claims (excluding protection fees where applicable) are typically processed to the original payment method or other options offered by the retailer. Any limitations or additional terms should be disclosed by the retailer at the point of sale.
Customer experiences
Many customers report fast, efficient support from Route with claims resolved quickly - even within minutes or hours - and appreciate friendly, professional help and smooth refund or replacement handling when packages are lost, damaged, or stolen. These positive experiences are common in third‑party reviews.
There are also reports of weaker experiences: some users have had claims linger in "review" status for a week or more with limited direct contact options; complaints on the BBB include delayed replacement shipments after claim approval; and community anecdotes note occasional difficulties when deliveries went to wrong addresses before resolution. Outcomes and response times can vary by case, merchant, and purchase channel.
Documentation checklist
- Order number and merchant receipt (purchase confirmation)
- Tracking number and shipping details
- Photos or video of damaged items or packaging (if applicable)
- Dates of purchase, delivery, and incident
- Proof of purchase from the app store (Google Play receipt with GPA number or Apple receipt) when applicable
- Screenshots of the Route purchase or confirmation and any claim reference numbers
- Contact email(s) and communication history with the merchant or Route
Common mistakes
Common errors include not confirming the point of purchase (Google Play vs App Store vs merchant web) and therefore contacting the wrong support channel; missing or not supplying the Google transaction number (GPA...) for Android purchases; attempting to cancel after the protection is already active and shipped; forgetting to cancel before a free trial ends; and failing to keep receipts, tracking numbers, or photos that support a claim. Also, some users expect Route to process App Store refunds - even though Apple controls iOS refunds - so check the purchase channel first.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play (Android) | Refunds may be issued via the original payment method; Route requires the Google transaction number (GPA) when you contact them. | Medium - involves Route and Google Play transaction info |
| App Store (iOS) | Apple handles cancellations/refunds for App Store purchases; Route cannot access Apple transactions. | Medium - must use Apple’s refund process |
| Web purchases (Route or merchant site) | Refunds requested through Route’s cancellation page/form; may be refunded to the original method or an alternative offered by the retailer. | Low - Medium - depends on merchant and timing |
| Protection already in transit / claim in use | Typically no refund of the protection premium; claim outcomes may provide reimbursement for item loss/damage per merchant/insurer rules. | High - refunds often limited or excluded |
After cancelling
After you cancel, save confirmation emails or reference numbers and monitor your payment method for the expected refund timeline. If you paid through Google Play, include the GPA transaction number when following up with Route; if you paid through Apple, follow Apple’s refund status in your purchase history. If the merchant or Route does not resolve the issue, you can escalate to your payment provider or local consumer protection authority.
