Cancellation Clio: Easy Method
What is Clio
Clio is a cloud-based legal practice management platform that helps law firms manage matters, documents, billing, client intake and payments across multiple products (for example, Clio Manage, Clio Grow and Clio Draft). It is used by firms for case and client management, time tracking, trust accounting and integrations with common office and accounting tools.
How to cancel Clio
- Clio Manage and Clio Grow (web): Only an account Administrator can close the account. Go to Settings > Account and Payment Info, click "Close Account," select a reason, then call Clio support when prompted for phone verification and confirm the cancellation. The cancellation becomes effective at the end of the current billing term and does not incur additional charges for that term. For details see the Clio help article: Deactivate Users and Cancel Account.
- Clio Draft (web): An administrator can cancel via Settings > Subscription > Cancel subscription, acknowledge the prompt, confirm a reason and complete cancellation. Clio support will not cancel a Draft subscription on your behalf. For details see the Clio Draft article: Clio Draft Subscription and Billing Information.
- Apple App Store / Google Play: There is no Clio support documentation indicating cancellation can be completed via the App Store or Google Play; subscriptions are generally managed through the web interface noted above.
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel a Clio subscription the account remains active until the end of the current paid term; access does not immediately terminate upon request but will not renew after the term ends. Clio’s Terms state that after cancellation your account content remains accessible for 90 days, after which data is deleted and cannot be recovered. Any immediate access to paid features ends at the term expiration and automated billing will stop after cancellation is processed.
Will I get a refund?
Clio’s Terms of Service specify that subscriptions - monthly or annual - are non‑refundable. There are no refunds or credits for partial periods, unused services, upgrades or downgrades, or removal of licenses. This applies unless Clio expressly states otherwise in a specific case. Separately, Clio Payments (the payments product) allows firms to issue full or partial refunds to clients for payments they received; transaction fees are not refunded for refunded transactions (voided payments may avoid fees). Clio does not appear to offer a default 14‑day refund right.

Your consumer rights in Canada
Canadian users are bound by Clio’s North American Terms of Service. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before renewal; canceling early does not typically entitle you to a refund for the remaining paid period and you remain responsible for the full balance for the term. Content retention after cancellation is 90 days, after which it is deleted. The contract references governing law (the terms indicate British Columbia law) and sets the contractual remedies - consumers should review the full Terms of Service for specifics. If you believe a billing or consumer protection issue applies under Canadian law, consider contacting a consumer protection agency or seeking legal advice specific to your province.
Customer experiences
Public reviews for Clio are largely positive on features like ease of use, integrations (Outlook, OneDrive, QuickBooks), notifications and customer support, with high ratings on sites such as Capterra. Users praise remote collaboration and organization tools. Critical reviews frequently cite billing frustrations (charged when not using the platform), difficulties obtaining refunds, issues cancelling without following the exact process, missing features some firms expect (project management, certain accounting add‑ons in Canada), and occasional UI or workflow bugs. Complaints about cancellation often involve administrators not completing required phone verification or attempting to cancel through unsupported channels.
Documentation checklist
- Have these ready before you cancel: administrator access to the account, billing/account details, the reason for cancelling, phone availability to complete Clio’s verification call, and a backup/export of your data (download important documents and reports). See: Deactivate Users and Cancel Account and Clio Terms of Service.
Common mistakes
Common errors include attempting to cancel from a non‑administrator account, failing to complete the required phone verification so the request is not finalized, assuming App Store/Play subscriptions will cancel Clio web subscriptions, and not exporting data before the 90‑day retention period ends. Another frequent misunderstanding is expecting a pro‑rata refund for unused time - Clio’s terms generally prohibit refunds. To avoid problems, verify admin rights, follow the exact cancellation flow and document your cancellation confirmation.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Clio Manage / Clio Grow (web, admin) | No (subscriptions are non‑refundable under the Terms) | Moderate - administrator rights required and phone verification is needed |
| Clio Draft (web, admin) | No (Terms indicate no refunds) | Easy - cancellable in Settings > Subscription by an admin |
| App Store / Google Play | No clear documentation - likely managed via web; refunds follow store policies | Variable / Uncertain - users should check their App Store/Play subscription settings and Clio web account |
After cancelling
After you cancel, download and back up any required matter files, documents, invoices and reports promptly; you will retain access for the remainder of your paid term and for 90 days post‑cancellation, after which data is deleted.
