Cancellation Github Copilot: Easy Method
What is Github Copilot
GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant that suggests code and completions inside editors and on GitHub, offering features such as code completions, in-line suggestions, and access to various AI models. It is available as individual and team/business plans, through GitHub billing, app stores, and direct subscriptions.
How to cancel Github Copilot
- App Store (iOS/iPad/macOS): Open the App Store → tap your name/icon → Subscriptions → Copilot → Cancel Subscription. Note: Apple handles payments and refunds; Copilot cannot cancel App Store subscriptions for you. For details, see Apple subscriptions support.
- Mac app downloaded from Copilot website (Stripe): Open the Copilot app → Settings → Subscription → Manage → Cancel; or delete your account (deleting the account auto-cancels the subscription). Copilot controls Stripe subscriptions directly.
- GitHub website (GitHub Copilot individual plan): Sign in to GitHub → Settings → Billing & licensing → Plans and usage → GitHub Copilot → Manage subscription → Cancel. You can review GitHub billing docs at GitHub Billing.
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel, your subscription stops future renewals but typically remains active until the end of the current billing cycle so you keep access for the period you paid for. If you purchased via App Store, Apple retains control of the billing and access timing. For direct Stripe subscriptions (Copilot app), Copilot manages the subscription and deleting your account will also cancel the subscription automatically. Cancellation usually stops future charges but does not automatically delete your account or associated data unless you explicitly request account deletion.
Will I get a refund?
Refund eligibility depends on how you purchased Copilot. Purchases made directly via Copilot (Stripe) are generally non-refundable, except there is a stated exception: if you cancel within one month of the initial purchase and then request a refund by email within five days of cancelling, a full refund may be provided at Copilot’s discretion. Purchases made via the App Store require refund requests to Apple and are handled at Apple’s discretion. For GitHub-billed individual Copilot subscriptions there is no broad refund policy stated; cancelling a trial avoids charges, and prorated refunds may be possible in certain migration scenarios (for example, when moving to a Business or Enterprise plan). Outside published windows, refunds or credits are not guaranteed and are subject to the platform or Copilot’s discretion.
Github Copilot plans and pricing
| Plan | Price (reported / note) | Period | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Pro | ≈ C$? (via bank conversion from US$10/month) | Monthly | Unlimited completions, 300 premium requests, access to various AI models |
| Copilot Pro (Annual) | ≈ C$244.40/year (reported example) | Annual | Same as monthly, billed annually |
| Copilot Pro+ | ≈ C$? (via bank conversion from US$39/month) | Monthly | All Pro features, 1,500 premium requests, access to all models |
| Copilot Business | ≈ C$? (via bank conversion from US$19/user/month) | Monthly | Team management, IP indemnity, 300 premium requests per user |
| Copilot Enterprise | ≈ C$? (via bank conversion from US$39/user/month) | Monthly | All Business features + Chat on GitHub.com, custom models, 1,000 premium requests per user |
Note: GitHub publishes USD pricing; Canadian customers are charged USD at checkout and the CAD amount depends on your bank or card exchange rate. The table shows reported approximations where available.
Your consumer rights in Canada
For purchases made via the Microsoft Store in Canada, you may be eligible for a prorated refund upon cancelling (Microsoft’s support pages provide details specific to Copilot Pro in Canada). For other channels, Canadian consumer protection laws can affect digital subscription rights but outcomes depend on the vendor’s terms and the timing of your request; outside stated refund/cancellation windows the platform’s policy typically governs. If you believe your statutory consumer rights have been violated, you can contact provincial consumer protection offices for guidance.
Customer experiences
Reviews are mixed. Some Canadian users praise Copilot for smooth IDE integration, productivity gains, creative assistance and classroom usefulness, especially in VS Code. Negative reports include unexpected charges, billing and cancellation problems, slow or unsatisfactory customer-support responses, and app bugs that made cancelling difficult on some platforms (for example, issues reported on Google Play). There have also been user frustration reports about intrusive features or difficulty opting out of certain Copilot behaviors.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and username used for the Copilot subscription
- Order receipt or order number (from GitHub, Stripe, Apple, or Microsoft)
- Date you started the subscription and billing cycle dates
- Payment method details or screenshot of the charge
- Screenshot or confirmation of the cancellation action (confirmation email or in-app confirmation)
- Any correspondence with support (ticket numbers, emails)
Common mistakes
Users commonly attempt to cancel in the wrong place: for example, deleting the Copilot app but not cancelling an App Store or GitHub subscription, or trying to cancel an App Store subscription through Copilot support (Apple handles those payments). Expecting an automatic refund after cancelling is another frequent misunderstanding - refunds depend on the purchase channel and timing. Other examples include not confirming cancellation (no confirmation received or not saved) and assuming cancellations are immediate when some systems keep service active until the paid period ends. App bugs or platform issues have also caused confusion where the UI does not show a clear “cancel” action.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| App Store (iOS/iPad/macOS) | Refunds handled by Apple (at Apple’s discretion) | Medium (must use Apple subscription settings) |
| Mac app via Copilot website (Stripe) | Generally non-refundable; exception: full refund possible if cancelled within 1 month and requested by email within 5 days of cancelling | Low - Medium (managed directly in app or by deleting account) |
| GitHub website (individual plan) | No general refund policy stated; trial cancellation avoids charge; prorated adjustments possible in specific migrations | Low (manage via GitHub Billing settings) |
After cancelling
After you cancel, keep your cancellation confirmation and receipts. If you need help or want to request a refund after cancellation, contact GitHub Support via GitHub Support or follow the appropriate platform support process (Apple for App Store purchases). For detailed Copilot docs and subscription management steps, see the Copilot section of GitHub Docs at GitHub Copilot docs.
