Cancellation Meetup: Simple Process

What is Meetup

Overview

Meetup is an online platform that helps people find and join local groups and events around shared interests. It offers free member access alongside paid subscriptions for enhanced member features and organizer plans that add tools for running groups and managing events.

How to cancel Meetup

  • Via Web (Desktop): Log in to Meetup → Profile icon → Settings → Meetup+ or Organizer Subscription → Click “Cancel subscription” → confirm cancellation. See the Meetup help article: Canceling a recurring subscription.
  • Via Meetup mobile apps (iOS or Android): Open the app → Profile → Settings → Meetup+ or Organizer subscription → Manage your subscription → Cancel subscription → follow the cancellation flow. See: Canceling a recurring subscription.
  • Via Apple App Store (iOS): If you purchased through Apple, cancel in Apple settings: Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → select Meetup → Cancel Subscription. See Apple support: Manage subscriptions on iPhone or iPad.
  • Via Google Play (Android): If you purchased through Google Play, cancel in the Play Store app: Play Store app → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → choose Meetup → Cancel subscription. Guidance: Cancel through Google Play.
  • Note on deactivation: Deactivating your Meetup account will automatically cancel subscriptions billed by Meetup, but it will not cancel subscriptions billed through Apple or Google - those must be canceled through the respective platforms. See: Deactivating an account.

What happens when you cancel

When you cancel a Meetup subscription billed directly by Meetup (web or in-app), the subscription stops auto-renewal. You generally retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period. If your subscription was billed through Apple or Google, you must cancel through those stores; cancelling on Meetup will not stop those charges. Meetup retains account and group data according to its terms - canceling a subscription does not necessarily delete your Meetup account or group content unless you explicitly deactivate or delete the account.

Will I get a refund?

Meetup’s published refund policy for subscriptions bought directly (not via Apple/Google) allows refunds within defined windows: 20 days for weekly and monthly plans, and 60 days for yearly plans. Refunds are not issued if the request falls outside those windows, if you downgraded your plan, if you already received a refund in the last eight months, or if the purchase was made through the Apple App Store (Apple handles those refunds). For member dues or event fees paid to organizers, refund policies vary by group; Meetup’s Trust & Safety team may intervene and refund certain payments (via Stripe) in cases such as fraud or misuse. For Meetup’s subscription refund policy see: Meetup subscription refund policy.

Your consumer rights in Canada

Under Canadian federal and provincial consumer protection laws, digital subscription contracts should clearly disclose cancellation and refund terms. Meetup’s public policies provide time-limited refunds for direct subscriptions, but they do not explicitly invoke a Canadian 14-day cancellation right. If you believe Meetup’s practices are unfair - such as hidden auto-renewals or misleading trial terms - you can raise the issue with the Competition Bureau or your provincial consumer protection office. Retain records of charges, cancellation attempts, and communications to support any complaint or dispute.

Customer experiences

User feedback is mixed. Some customers report straightforward cancellations and timely refunds when they fall within Meetup’s published windows. However, many negative reports describe difficulty finding or completing cancellation, unexpected charges after trials, duplicate charges, glitches in the app or website, and slow or unhelpful customer support. Organizers have also reported instances where cancellations or trial changes led to abrupt loss of group control. These accounts suggest keeping detailed records and double-checking cancellation confirmations.

Documentation checklist

  • Account email and username; screenshots of the subscription page and billing history; confirmation emails or on-screen cancellation confirmation; transaction receipts (credit card, Apple, or Google receipts); dates of attempted cancellation; any replies from Meetup support or organizer(s).

Common mistakes

Common errors include assuming account deactivation cancels an Apple- or Google-billed subscription (it does not), not saving a cancellation confirmation, and missing the refund windows for direct purchases (20 days for monthly, 60 for yearly). Another frequent mistake is relying solely on in-app prompts without checking the billing history or the App Store/Play Store subscription lists; users have reported surprise charges where they believed they had cancelled. If you rely on a trial, cancel before the trial end and keep proof of cancellation.

Comparative recap

Method Refund Difficulty
Web (Desktop) Direct purchases: Refund possible within Meetup windows (20 days monthly, 60 days yearly) Low - Medium (steps are available but some users report navigation issues)
Meetup Mobile App (iOS/Android) Direct in-app purchases: Follow Meetup refund policy; check billing history Low - Medium (cancellation flows exist but can vary by app version)
Apple App Store (iOS) Refunds handled by Apple (Meetup cannot issue these) Medium (must use Apple subscription management/support)
Google Play (Android) Refunds handled by Google Play (Meetup cannot issue these) Medium (must use Google Play subscription management/support)
Account deactivation Cancels Meetup-billed subscriptions but not Apple/Google; refund depends on timing and Meetup policy Medium (effective for Meetup billing, but may not stop store-billed charges)

After cancelling

After you cancel, save any on-screen confirmation and check your email for a cancellation notice. Monitor your billing method (credit card, bank, Apple ID, Google account) for charges in the next billing cycle to confirm cancellation took effect. If you need a refund or suspect an unauthorized charge, start with Meetup’s refund article: Meetup subscription refund policy, and review payment policy guidance: Payment Policies. For Apple or Google purchases, use Apple support: Apple subscriptions or Google Play support guidance: Google Play cancellation. If you prefer a written cancellation sent to Meetup, send a tracked/certified letter and keep the delivery receipt.
