Cancel Preply: Easy Method
What is Preply
Overview
Preply is an online marketplace connecting students with private tutors for language and academic lessons. It offers one-to-one lessons booked per tutor or via subscription-like lesson plans managed in a 28-day cycle.
How it works
Students book lessons with tutors who set their own rates and schedules. Payments are billed per lesson or per a recurring tutor plan, and lesson credits are tracked in your Preply account.
How to cancel Preply
Cancel a tutor subscription on the web
- Sign in at Preply on the web and go to Subscription Settings.
- Select the tutor’s plan, click the three dots next to their name, and choose “Cancel subscription”.
- You will retain any lessons already paid for; scheduled lessons remain valid.
- More details: Preply subscription control (web).
Cancel in the mobile app
- Open the Preply mobile app and tap your profile icon.
- Tap More Settings → Subscription, then swipe to Subscription to manage or cancel the plan.
- The mobile cancellation process aligns with the web flow for retention of paid lessons.
- More details: Preply subscription control (mobile).
Cancel or reschedule individual lessons
- Students can cancel or reschedule a lesson for free up to 12 hours before it starts.
- If you cancel less than 12 hours before a lesson, you will be charged for that lesson.
- Rescheduling under 12 hours before the lesson is not allowed.
- See the policy: Student lessons cancellation policy.
What happens when you cancel
Access to paid lessons
When you cancel a tutor subscription you keep any lessons already paid for. Scheduled lessons do not expire and can be used after cancellation.
Unscheduled lesson credits and billing cycle
Unscheduled lesson credits expire at the end of your 28-day billing cycle if unused. Canceling stops future automatic renewals but does not automatically recover expired credits.
Account and data
Your account remains active after cancellation so you can access past lessons, messages, and invoices. You may delete your account separately if you choose to remove personal data.
Will I get a refund?
Monthly subscription refunds
Preply may provide a refund for a monthly subscription if no credits (lessons) were used during that subscription period.
The payment must have been made less than 28 days ago for a refund to be considered.
Yearly plans and trial-period refunds
For yearly subscription plans, if canceled within a 14-day trial period with no lessons used, a full refund may be requested.
If lessons were used during the trial or subscription, a partial refund corresponding to unused lessons may be available; a processing fee may apply.
Exceptions and practical notes
- Refunds are evaluated case-by-case and may be subject to processing fees or partial deductions.
- If you believe an unauthorized charge occurred, contact Preply support promptly and retain payment records.
- More on subscriptions: Subscription FAQ.
Preply plans and pricing
Typical lesson rates (examples)
Preply pricing varies by tutor, experience, and location. Tutors set their own per-lesson rates rather than a fixed NZD subscription plan.
Sample rates table
| Plan | Price | Period | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sample tutor lesson rate (Auckland) | NZ$20.00 | Per 50-min lesson | Entry-level tutor rate example in Auckland |
| Mid-range tutor rate (Christchurch) | NZ$23.00 | Per 50-min lesson | Typical tutor rate in Christchurch |
| Higher tutor rate (Christchurch) | NZ$37.00 | Per 50-min lesson | Experienced/tutor with test prep in Christchurch |
| Typical tutor rate (Wellington) | NZ$26.00 | Per 50-min lesson | Average rate in Wellington |
| New tutor rate (Auckland) | NZ$20.00 | Per 50-min lesson | New tutor promotional rate |
| High-end tutor rate (Auckland) | NZ$60.00 | Per 50-min lesson | Higher-level tutor rate in Auckland |
Note: Preply does not offer fixed subscription plans in NZD; pricing is set by tutors and billed per lesson or per subscription bundle within a 28-day cycle.
Your consumer rights in New Zealand
Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA)
The CGA requires services to be provided with reasonable care and skill, fit for purpose, and charged reasonably. Businesses cannot contract out of these rights.
Fair Trading Act protections
The Fair Trading Act protects you against misleading, deceptive, or unfair practices. Advertising, billing, or refund statements that mislead may breach the Act.
Dispute options
- If you cannot resolve a refund or service issue, you can seek recourse via the Disputes Tribunal.
- Other sources of help include the Citizens Advice Bureau and Community Law Centres.
- General guidance: NZ consumer rights and refunds.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
Many reviewers on platforms like Trustpilot praise Preply for ease of use, tutor variety, flexible scheduling, and a user-friendly interface.
Users often report meaningful language progress and responsive customer support in positive reviews.
Common complaints
Frequent negative feedback concerns difficulty managing or canceling subscriptions and unexpected auto-pay charges.
Other recurring issues include lost lesson credits at the end of billing cycles, complex refund processes, and reports of delayed or partial refunds.
What to watch for
- Keep clear records of payments and scheduled lessons to support any dispute.
- Read tutor plan details carefully - rates, rollovers, and expiration policies vary by tutor.
Documentation checklist
What to gather before contacting support
- Account email and full name used on Preply.
- Invoice or payment receipts showing dates and amounts.
- Lesson schedule entries or tutor subscription name.
- Screenshots of subscription settings, billing history, and error messages if present.
What to include in a refund request
- Clear statement of what you want (refund, partial refund, cancellation confirmation).
- Dates of payments and unused lesson credits.
- Any prior communication with Preply customer service referenced by date or ticket number.
Common mistakes
Missing the 12-hour cancellation window
A common error is trying to cancel individual lessons within 12 hours of start time and expecting a refund. Under Preply rules, cancellations less than 12 hours before the lesson are charged.
Assuming unused credits automatically refund
Many users assume unscheduled credits will be refunded on cancellation. In reality, unscheduled credits often expire at the end of your 28-day cycle and are not automatically refunded.
Not documenting payments and requests
Failing to save receipts, screenshots, or support ticket IDs makes disputes harder to resolve. Always retain evidence of payments and cancellation attempts.
