Cancel Spectrum: Easy Method
What is Spectrum
Overview
Spectrum refers here to Spectrum-related services and spectrum licences used in New Zealand, including licences recorded on the Register of Radio Frequencies (RRF) and commercial IT/subscription services offered under a Spectrum Service Contract.
Service types
Licences govern use of radio frequencies and are managed via the RRF. Separate consumer products such as phone, internet or subscription services are governed by Spectrum's own terms and conditions.
How to cancel Spectrum
Cancelling a spectrum licence (RRF)
- Sign in to the Register of Radio Frequencies (RRF) using your RealMe login.
- Locate the licence record you want to cancel and follow the on-screen cancellation steps.
- On submission the system auto-generates and registers a Form 10 Notice of Cancellation.
- Once Form 10 is registered the licence is cancelled and cannot be reactivated.
- Reference: RSM - Cancel a spectrum licence.
Cancelling other Spectrum services (phone, internet, subscriptions)
- Review the service or subscription agreement for fixed-term obligations and termination clauses.
- Contact Spectrum customer support as specified in your contract or use the formal correspondence address for written notice.
- Be aware that early termination charges may apply for fixed-term consumer plans depending on remaining time and the plan's terms.
- Reference: Consumer Protection NZ - Cancel your plan.
What happens when you cancel
Licence status and access
When you cancel a spectrum licence via the RRF and Form 10 is registered, the licence is permanently cancelled and cannot be reactivated.
Fees, renewals and credits
Once the Form 10 cancellation is registered, any pending renewal fees for that licence are removed.
If fees had already been invoiced and are no longer applicable, a credit note will be issued to the licence rightholder.
Will I get a refund?
Refunds for Spectrum IT/subscription services
Under Spectrum’s Service Contract in NZ, if you terminate before the end of a fixed or subscription period you must pay the balance of charges due to the end of that period.
In short, there is generally no refund for unused term unless the contract expressly provides otherwise.
Warranty, defects and limited exceptions
Spectrum’s warranty allows remedies for defects in service or workmanship if notified within 30 days.
If a defect is confirmed, Spectrum may re-supply the service or issue a credit or refund for the defective element, subject to the warranty terms. Reference: Spectrum Terms & Conditions - Warranty.

Your consumer rights in New Zealand
Early termination and contract terms
For consumer telecoms and internet plans, early termination charges may apply where you end a fixed-term contract early.
Any charges must align with the provider’s terms and the contract you signed. For guidance see Consumer Protection NZ: Cancel your plan.
Statutory guarantees and limits
Services supplied to consumers may be covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, which provides remedies for services that fail to meet acceptable quality or fit-for-purpose standards.
Some business-to-business or fixed-term contract provisions may limit remedies; check your contract and seek advice if unsure.
Customer experiences
Positive feedback
Some reviewers praised Spectrum for strong support, a helpful knowledge centre and accurate, improving product functionality.
Other users highlighted smooth data flow between modules and ongoing product evolution. Source: Capterra NZ.
Negative feedback
Other users reported problems with customer support responsiveness, clunky day-to-day workflows and weak reporting tools.
There are also reports of hardware/software instability (e.g. modems or set‑top boxes crashing) and slow or unreliable internet service in some cases. Source: Capterra NZ.
Documentation checklist
For cancelling a spectrum licence
- RealMe login credentials for RRF access.
- Licence identifier (RRF record number) and rightholder details.
- Evidence of authorisation if you are not the registered rightholder (manager authorisation or both parties as required).
- Contact details for the rightholder/manager for credit note or correspondence.
For cancelling a subscription or consumer plan
- Copy of the service contract or terms and conditions.
- Account number and customer identity verification (ID, email, phone).
- Proof of payment for recent invoices if disputing charges.
- Written notice of cancellation (email or postal) if required by the contract.
Common mistakes
Missing authorisation
Attempting to cancel a licence without proper authority is common. Only authorised parties (Rightholder, Manager or both as specified) can cancel via the RRF.
Note: if fees are overdue six months or more, a Manager may be able to cancel even if not otherwise authorised.
Assuming automatic refunds or reactivation
Many people incorrectly expect pro rata refunds for cancelled subscriptions; under Spectrum’s subscription terms you normally remain liable for the balance of the fixed term.
Also avoid assuming a cancelled spectrum licence can be reactivated - Form 10 registration makes the cancellation final.
Comparative recap
At-a-glance comparison
| Topic | Spectrum licence (RRF) | Phone/Internet or Spectrum subscription |
|---|---|---|
| How to cancel | Use RRF via RealMe; system creates Form 10 | Follow contract terms; contact provider or send written notice |
| Authority required | Rightholder, Manager, or both per licence roles (Manager may act if fees 6+ months overdue) | Account holder or authorised contact per contract |
| Refunds | Pending renewal fees removed; credit note issued if invoiced | Generally no pro rata refunds for fixed-term subscriptions; warranty exceptions may apply |
| Reactivation | Not possible after Form 10 registration | May be possible subject to provider terms and new agreement |
After cancelling
What to expect next
For cancelled licences you should receive confirmation of Form 10 registration and any credit note if applicable.
