Cancellation Wave: Easy Method
What is Wave
Wave is an online small-business financial software suite offering accounting, invoicing, receipt scanning, payment processing and optional payroll services. It provides a free tier for basic accounting and invoicing and paid add-ons or plans for advanced features such as auto-imported bank transactions, receipt scanning and payroll services available to Canadian users (excluding Quebec for payroll).
How to cancel Wave
- On the web (via waveapps.com): sign in, go to Business Settings → Manage Subscriptions → Manage subscription → Cancel Subscription. If you subscribed through the iOS App Store or Google Play, you must cancel through your Apple or Google account settings (cancellations cannot be completed on the Wave website for app-store subscriptions). After you cancel, plan features remain available until the end of your paid period.
What happens when you cancel
When you cancel a Pro or Receipts plan, Wave states that plan features remain accessible until the end of the current paid billing period. After that period ends, paid features tied to the subscription will no longer be available, though your account and its records remain associated with your Wave account. If you rely on payroll or payments, ensure final payments and remittances are complete before cancellation; payroll and payment flows have separate processing timelines and may require additional follow-up.
Will I get a refund?
Refund eligibility is governed by Wave’s Paid Subscription Terms of Service. If you subscribed through the web, Wave directs users to request refunds via their chatbot support (called "Mave"). If you subscribed via Apple’s App Store or Google Play, you must request refunds using Apple or Google’s respective refund processes. Wave’s Help Center does not reference a general 14‑day statutory cooling-off refund right; refunds are therefore subject to Wave’s internal policies and the policies of the app stores.
Wave plans and pricing
| Plan | Price | Period | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter (Accounting & Invoicing) | C$0/month | Monthly | Unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records; accept online payments (payment processing fees apply: 2.9% + $0.60, 3.4% + $0.60 for Amex) |
| Pro Plan (Accounting & Invoicing) | C$12.50/month (promo) OR C$250/year | Monthly or Annual | Everything in Starter plus auto-import & categorization of bank transactions, receipt scanning, discounted transaction fees for first 10 payments, automated reminders |
| Payroll Add‑on | C$25 base + C$6 per active employee/month + C$6 per contractor paid | Monthly | Direct deposits, CRA remittances, ROE prep, T4 generation (available in Canada excluding Quebec) |
Your consumer rights in Canada
Wave’s Help Center does not explicitly reference a statutory 14‑day cooling-off or automatic right-to-cancel refund that some consumer protection laws provide. As a Canadian consumer or business, you retain general consumer protections under applicable provincial and federal laws, but any refund for a paid subscription will be processed according to Wave’s terms for web subscriptions or Apple/Google policies for app-store subscriptions. If you cannot resolve a billing dispute with Wave, you can consider filing a complaint with consumer-protection channels such as the Better Business Bureau or your provincial consumer affairs office.
Customer experiences
User feedback on Wave is mixed. Review sites like Capterra report generally positive ratings (many users praise the free tier, ease of use and integrations with accountants). However, public complaint platforms show serious negative reports - particularly regarding payments, payroll, and customer support responsiveness - where some users report withheld funds, delayed payouts, slow chat responses, and unresolved disputes. Outcomes reported by customers vary: some obtain satisfactory resolutions, while others escalate to formal complaints.
Documentation checklist
- Account email and business name; screenshots of your subscription page showing plan and billing dates; receipts/invoice showing charges; copies of chat transcripts or support emails (including any Mave chatbot interactions); bank or card statements showing charges; payroll run records if payroll is involved; date-stamped cancellation confirmation (if provided).
Common mistakes
Common errors include cancelling in the wrong place - users who subscribed via the iOS or Google Play app must cancel through Apple or Google, not via the Wave website, and vice versa. Another frequent mistake is assuming cancellation automatically triggers a refund; refunds are not guaranteed and depend on Wave’s or the app store’s policies. Users also sometimes fail to keep thorough records of support communications (chat logs, confirmation messages), which makes disputes harder to resolve. Finally, not accounting for payroll timing and remittance deadlines can leave unpaid or delayed payroll responsibilities after cancellation.
Comparative recap
| Method | Refund | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Web subscription (waveapps.com) | Refunds must be requested via Wave’s chatbot support (Mave) and are subject to Wave’s terms. | Moderate - requires contacting Wave support and referencing subscription details. |
| iOS App Store subscription | Refunds must be requested through Apple’s refund process; Wave does not process these refunds directly. | Varies - handled through Apple; success depends on Apple’s policies and timelines. |
| Google Play Store subscription | Refunds must be requested through Google Play’s refund process; Wave does not process these refunds directly. | Varies - handled through Google; success depends on Google’s policies and timelines. |
After cancelling
After you cancel, keep a record of the cancellation confirmation and monitor your payment method for any further charges. If you need a refund for a web subscription, start a request with Wave’s support via their chatbot (Mave) and attach your supporting documentation. For app-store subscriptions, submit refund requests through Apple or Google as applicable. If you encounter unresolved billing or payout issues, you may consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your provincial consumer protection office. For Wave’s cancellation guidance, see Wave’s help article: Cancel a Pro or Receipts Plan subscription. For reviews and user reports, see: Wave on Capterra and Wave reviews on Trustpilot. For unresolved complaints, see Wave’s BBB profile: Wave on BBB.
